Drains are fun but the location was just not close enough to the CBD for my liking and it was a pain getting in and out every time so I have found a suitable bridge much closer to the CBD. Met up with a mate today who helped me secure a sleeping bag and a bomber jacket. Then went and got dinner, mmm 3 sausage rolls, a banana and a bottle of water. Free of course. Life is good.
I had to pay for the sausage rolls I had for dinner, i feel so cheated! Wait.. Did you get free sauce to?! ;(
Could've had sauce but didn't want it. There was pies and stuff too. Basically the van that brings them each night gets all the hot stuff etc that some 7/11 stores in Melbourne hasn't sold during the day. Sandwiches too.
Wander often. Wonder always.

How much of a danger is posionious/harmful gas when in drains? Should I buy a canary? Haha. Seriously though is a gas monitor necessary, and if so can anyone recommend a good one?

Gas analysis systems aren't things that your average explorer carries, nor have I ever been in need of one. Perhaps it's useful for some mines, old sewage pipes or a select group of abandoned facilities, although for drains it's not something that I've found necessary :)

Well I went to deep throat with the Gf yesterday (wanted to see how she would handle a confined space - and she love it which I did not expect lol) and when we nearly got to the end we were hit with a huge amount of what smelt like petrol fumes.
Luckily I've got a respi from my graff days which allowed us to breathe easy.
This got me thinking tho what if it was a more dangerous and harmful gas. Is it a risk you just have to take venturing into the unkown?

I'll ask around. My sister lives around there and my parents were stationed there for a couple of years with the NZ army, so I'm sure they'll know some sites :) I'll let you know
Cheers man that'll be awesome

There's probably heaps, but keep in mind that if you leave the main cities there's fuckloads of landmines laying around in that country still.
More than one-third of the land in six central Vietnamese provinces remains contaminated with land mines and unexploded bombs from the Vietnam War, according to a study released Friday.
Nearly 35 years after the war's end, Vietnamese civilians are still routinely killed and maimed by leftover mines and other explosives. Vietnam estimates that more than 42,000 people have been killed in such accidents since 1975.

Vietnam's Ministry of Defense estimates 16.3 million acres are still contaminated across the country, said Thao Nguyen, the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation's country director.
Theres usually heaps of abandos in asia but i dont wana waste too much time trying to find good ones when im there, and I don't plan on venturing too far outside the city limits where I'd imagine most undiscovered mined sites are in the jungle n rural areas....I'm pretty good at playing lava

Wording dude
It's possible that something had spilled on the road and went down a side pipe. Generally you won't run into those kinds of things in drains, and when you do I would assume that it should be easily recognised (in your case, the smell was very pungent). As long as you don't stick around, there shouldn't be too many issues. In my opinion, it's a rare occurrence and is just a risk that you take, and also one that is somewhat easily avoided in most cases. Everyone has their own opinions though.

There's a drain near me that sometimes smells like a sewer. Weird because I don't think it's a sewer overflow outlet, but never ventured in. Maybe one day.

I assumed that it was just run off but as I'm not very experienced with drains I was just wondering. I read something about it previously but wanted to know from people's experience. Got the answer I needed though :)
