That's pretty awesome. There should be way more of thse vans in Aus.

How much of a danger is posionious/harmful gas when in drains? Should I buy a canary? Haha. Seriously though is a gas monitor necessary, and if so can anyone recommend a good one?

Gas analysis systems aren't things that your average explorer carries, nor have I ever been in need of one. Perhaps it's useful for some mines, old sewage pipes or a select group of abandoned facilities, although for drains it's not something that I've found necessary

Well I went to deep throat with the Gf yesterday (wanted to see how she would handle a confined space - and she love it which I did not expect lol) and when we nearly got to the end we were hit with a huge amount of what smelt like petrol fumes.
Luckily I've got a respi from my graff days which allowed us to breathe easy.
This got me thinking tho what if it was a more dangerous and harmful gas. Is it a risk you just have to take venturing into the unkown?

I'll ask around. My sister lives around there and my parents were stationed there for a couple of years with the NZ army, so I'm sure they'll know some sites I'll let you know

It's possible that something had spilled on the road and went down a side pipe. Generally you won't run into those kinds of things in drains, and when you do I would assume that it should be easily recognised (in your case, the smell was very pungent). As long as you don't stick around, there shouldn't be too many issues. In my opinion, it's a rare occurrence and is just a risk that you take, and also one that is somewhat easily avoided in most cases. Everyone has their own opinions though.

There's a drain near me that sometimes smells like a sewer. Weird because I don't think it's a sewer overflow outlet, but never ventured in. Maybe one day.

I assumed that it was just run off but as I'm not very experienced with drains I was just wondering. I read something about it previously but wanted to know from people's experience. Got the answer I needed though
