Manholes

Hey there just a quick question on how manholes work. I've come across a couple of manholes from the top and seem to be unable to lift them up. Do I need a manhole key or do i just need to try harder, maybe hit they gym a bit

. Two manholes in particular ive tried to take off but wouldn't budge that i'd like to explore in would be Dougo's dunny as i'd like to see that part of maze without walking all the way there and back, and the driveway manhole of great stairway for a similar reason. Also, are they easier to lift from below? Anything else to know? Thanks

The road manholes are s***. I've seen YouTube videos of hydraulic powered diggers trying to lift the cover and pulling the entire cover and collar and half the drain out of the road! Basically they are at most "decoration"

The REAL manholes are usually about 20 metres from the main drain and accessed by a horizontal crawl pipe. You'll see them while walking along the main pipe. They'll be things like gutter boxes, manholes in parks and grilles in driveways. Anything that is not on a road.

Can confirm this in person from my job. The asphalt laid around many in road manholes isn't done all too carefully and often overlaps the cover. Making it impossible to open by hand and ripping up the road when using heavy equipment to open it.
Honestly I'd never exit from an in road manhole anyways unless I knew exactly where I was. Even then cars can appear at any time so would just prefer not to if it can be avoided. Entry maybe depending on how busy it is.
