Came across 2 of these in a drain, one at the entrance and another further down. Wasn't sure if these a sensors or something else, if anyone has info on this would be appreciated.

It’s hard to tell from the picture, but it might be a hydraulic depth sensor… either optical or radar. There’s one similar in Gets Bigger. It seems this one has been destroyed already?
Do you have any close ups of the label? What drain?

Those were the only pics I got of it. The drains called "bad air", not much info on it, but its close-by (west) of the old paper mill abando

Iso thinks it's probably a water level sensor.

Off topic, but we called it Bad Air because it was the first drain we saw with a
DRAIN SUBJECT TO SUDDEN FLOODING AND BAD AIR sign at the entrance.

I noticed the thing above the flow had jpeg camera on it, so I do wonder if it used to feed pictures or video back to the surface, but as others have said, seems destroyed now. I think they use the ones in the flow of the river/stream bed in the UK as well, but I have not personally seen one. If you ever do encounter one, best not to disturb it as it may alert someone of your presence, or cause a penstock or something to open elsewhere in the system.
Geographically, Ireland is a medium-sized rural island that is slowly but steadily being consumed by sheep.

There's one somewhat similar at the open grate in maze, appears to be an ultrasonic depth sensor, not sure if it has the capacity to open any floodgates or if there even is in maze
