Hey everyone! Call me teriyaki :)

I've been really into exploring my local area for a few years now, usually scouring about nature reserves or any anomalies in the tedious urban landscape (i.e. parks, culverts, lookouts) as a reprieve from everyday life. I've taken a liking to draining recently, however I've only been limited to exploring the drains around the two E's of the T9, which I've found quite enjoyable so far (there's still so many offshoots I want to explore!)
So far I've only found three separate systems (one in ping, two in ea) and would love to be privy to any others in the vicinity!
I've attached some random pictures for "proof", but if any of you have also explored these drains do please shoot a DM!

Some of the pics have extra info or questions :)
I've also attempted doing some of the big boys, including Hercules Pillars, but unfortunately I couldn't find a way in... we had to firstly fight through a feisty thicket of flowers, the ones with hundreds of spiny petals that stick to your clothes and skin. (I looked at google street view beforehand and they weren't even there 2019!) It seems they've just been letting the grass grow and now it's nigh unbearable to traverse. Anyway we made it to where the opening was in full view, however couldn't fathom how to get down there (it's at least a 2m drop?!) Just wondering if there are any alternate entrances (possibly at LC river?) that don't involve getting hand hemmorhages from iron wiring.

I love draining, despite my really really strong arachnophobia... I'm also quite scared of most insects and just generally jittery around small animals you wouldn't typically find in a zoo.

Aside from draining, I also have a fascination with abandoned buildings. I've only explored the abandoned Balmain Leagues Club (could do pictures, but they're in heic form so hassle to convert (darnit apple!)), which had a turd next to a toilet, instead of in...
The feeling of isolation when you're essentially in the heart of Sydney is really cool to me, and part of the appeal of drains too!

Just a quick question, in the EW drain (the one that goes under the station), right east of the station there's an offshoot to the right, however it smells horrible... Once I tried going in about 20m, but couldn't help turning back due to the stink (maybe a 6/10, where a 10 would be a cubicle of unmaintained blue mountains camping reserve toilet with no plumbing). What should I do? Should I avoid drains like this that stink (is this human refuse?!) or should I endure lest I miss something amazing further down? It's comfortable to walk in and I definitely want to explore further if the smell isn't a threat to my health lol...

Look forward to getting to know you better!

Hi teriyaki, welcome!

Thanks for the write up and the pictures. The first drain in your list is known as Candle Room.

I would say that a lot of Sydney drains are actually quite clean but if you're uncomfortable with insects you might struggle in some of the smaller/dirtier systems!

Thanks for the info!

I might dabble in some of the more unpleasant drains first in order to clear out the worst of the worst :D
Then once I reach the real deal drains I'll have learned to appreciate the small things...
something like that lol

Yes you can get to hercs pillars from the lanecove river side via a tiny bridge and the creek that runs under it, however the plants aren't to friendly from that side either.

I don't think this type of post would get replies anyhow. But posting it on someone else's introductory thread definitely wont get any responses.
Wander often. Wonder always.

I think wombat was actually answering the question. The downstream end can also be thick and the pool at the end is also usually flooded. (The only times I've seen it not flooded is if another explorer empties it.)

Thanks guys! I went to Herc's today and as expected the downstream end is totally flooded... decided to go around to the national park and investigate the downstream end, but couldn't get into the gap under the bridge without a great risk of falling into the creek... oh well
maybe more experience might help bleh
