Hi guys

So what gear do you take when you go exploring?

If I go tunnelling I usually take;
Headlamp
2 small LED torches that I clip to my belt
large 4D cell LED maglite style torch
spare batteries for at least 2 of the torches
length of rope or a rope ladder (optional - but has saved my ass on one occasion!)
H/H UHF radio (sometimes a second if I need to give one to someone) + H/H VHF marine radio
Camera + lens + tripod - either in a waist bag or a backpack

If I'm looking at abandoned buildings etc;
Headlamp
large 4D cell LED maglite style torch
UHF radio (sometimes a second if I need to give one to someone)
Camera + lens + tripod in backpack

If I'm doing a reccy;
small torch
UHF radio

Clothing;
long tradie style work pants with lots of pockets
either steel caps or gum boots
comfortable collared tshirt
fluro vest in one of my pockets (makes me look the part when entering manholes etc)

Camera, flexi tripod and LED torch, all in a super zoom camera case.
I travel light :P
Oh and my phone as a backup torch/emergency contact device.
I do plan on investing in more suited clothing though. And a headlamp would come in handy lol.

I always thought that what I packed was overkill, but the thought of being stuck underground with no lighting and no comms scares the hell out of me..
Aside from having the backpack with my camera, and two torches on my belt, everything else fits into pockets.

I don't think it's necessarily overkill, I probably put too much trust in what I carry with me :lol:

I try and travel light-ish but I'd prefer to have too much gear rather than not enough gear so I take:
- DSLR + Tripod (location dependent)
- Phone
- Multi-tool
- Walkie-talkies (location dependent)
- Torch
- Headlamp
- Gloves (location dependent)

I spent a bit of $$ getting a good torch (Klarus XT2C) with a defensive strobe. It's waterproof, 470 lumens and with a dedicated strobe button is great for temporarily blinding/disorienting people while escaping. I really think that everyone one of us should have a similar device, it works well at a distance and doesn't involve you actually physically harming anyone (unless they trip on something).
The downside is that once you strobe someone you only get maybe 5 seconds before they realise what is going on and shade their eyes and are able keep moving toward you, but it is great initially because most people have no idea that these things exist :)

Have about a few metres. But I've hardly used it although I may need it to get access to the jetty at Catherine Hill Bay as the spiked fences and gates are quite high.

Rural sites.
Yer well the usual camera phone, water, sometimes food on a long tour, and as these sites are rural, always long pants and boots (possible snakes) shirt etc.

Urban sites.
Mainly do old aboveground stuff, similar to above but leave food/drink in the car. May add a torch if we know it will be dark inside.

Not really into doing drains.

I still don't have a decent head lamp but I really need one. Lighting a drain 20 meters away with your only torch for a photo gets a bit fuckin hairy at times... I swear more s*** crawls up my legs when I'm in the dark.

Inova t3 rechargeable torch (gotta agree with twistie, strobe function is handy!)
Mini Maglite as a backup + spare batteries
Olympus 1030sw camera. Shockproof and waterproof therefore Dynamite proof lol (I have a habit of falling on my arse, just ask barnz)
Leatherman Multi tool with diamond file, saw blade and cutting hook. Very handy for getting yourself untangled in tight spots.
BULK Cigarettes
And if nobody else is joining the party I take my Bull Arab, she has a good nose for trouble.
