Hey I'm from Melbourne Australia I'm a teenager looking to get into urban exploration, looks like a lot of fun. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas.

Hmm, I would start with "you're not old enough for that". But you could be 18 or 19.
But really, if you're young you may underestimate some of the risks, so it is worth exploring with experienced exploreres while learning the ropes. Start with topside and be conservative, don't take risks.

Wooden floors can rot and collapse on you with no warning.

Also, DON'T explore under the influence of drink or drugs. There have been several UE related deaths in Australia and almost half of them involved people who were drunk.

Finally, weather reports, check them before even thinking of going in a drain.

I don't drink and do not do drugs. I realise that this is quite dangerous, but everything outside is dangerous to a certain extent. I'm not stating my age online but how old would you say you should be to do this stuff?

if you're under 16 you're in for a s*** time. My advice is don't get into it - no matter how careful you are the police will eventually catch up and it's not worth it

So you say don't do this stuff? At all? No matter the age?

I'd hazard a guess you're a bit too young if you won't even state your age online. But ayy it's all just a number, do stupid things while you're young. Bad choices make good stories. Thanks @slippn for le quote

@Walnut, you have to be aged 40 at bare minimum.

@Echo, you're just mad because I stuck my fingers into power sockets and didn't die. I'm sorry man, I was only like 8 when I did all that crazy s***. I gave up doing crazy stuff when I was 9. Oh, except for that time I fractured my arm at 16. Oh and that time I fell through a catwalk when I was 24. Oh yeah and the time I put a nasty scar on my forehead the day afterwards. And yeah the time I fell over 3 times in that shitty drain I had to wade through the Yarra River to get into when I was 26. And yeah the time I popped a manhole under a car when I was 25 was pretty crazy too.

But none of that crap will happen to Walnut, he's a teenager man, they know everything.

@Walnut, with all seriousness, yeah, if you are under 18, don't do Urbex. Look at pics of it online, research risks, but wait till you gain some really sound judgement before you do it unless you do it with a responsible adult (unlike myself who is an irresponsible adult).

If you were to ask me if it's worth it, I would say to most people it isn't, and that starting is a bad idea irrespective of age.

As far as 18+ goes it doesn't matter - if you're below 18 police will be more lenient but you're also more likely to be caught

Go in drains!

All the trouble I've ever been in (and I've been in serious trouble before) has been in topsides. If you're worried about trouble, that is.

The best way to avoid trouble is to not do it, of course.

General tips, don't do it alone, check out some low risk (i.e. trashed) locations first and eventually you'll get the hang of things. Certain things you'll only learn from more experienced explorers, but as mentioned previously in this thread most of-age explorers will not explore with you until you're of-age as well.

the older people on this thread are more educated than me and i highly respect and agree with what they have said. urbex has been the greatest adventures and the funnest times of my life. in my opinion, i can highly recommend it, but don't go and do anything crazy or extreme. the police are very aware about urbex, i recommend staying away from loop and high rise buildings, or anything that can risk your life because it's not worth it. casual exploration of abandonments or whatever is okay, but if you're not 100% sure about your safety, don't risk it.

I try not to plug my gram on here as it's looked upon negatively by many in the scene. You've heard of me, I had a banter with you and Mackoc in the comments of one of you photos a few days back.
