New from Canberra, any suggestions on where to get started?

Hi Guys,

I only joined a couple of days ago but am really keen to explore some of the more unseen places in my area.
Could I get some tips and tricks for starting off?

Hey mate welcome to the forums , what are you interested in drains , abandos ,roofs ,,,other?

Mainly abandos but there don't seem to be many around. The drains also seem pretty cool though.

You're right, not many abandos in Canberra. The drains are..... average to say the least.
Mind you, an hour's drive south or more and you see some spectacular stuff. And then there's Golburn.

Heaps of abando's in Canberra at the moment. You must live south if you haven't seen them, or suffer from cataracts disease, either way they're hard to miss if you're around braddon and civic... Forget about abando's anyway, they're the poor man's explore. Fire up google maps and get a drain or two up you, proverbially, son.

Oh yes THOSE! I forgot about those because they're just totally in plain sight until they knock them down. I used to walk right past them when visiting the Gorman House markets.
Good old urban renewal. Move the poor into the suburbs and redevelop all that nice prime real estate into houses for the rich.

This. Although is only heaps for Canberra standards. A lot of them currently or soon to be demolished though.

The ones you speak of are currently being torn down. Pretty cool to go and watch on a lunch break though.

Plus the added fact that most urban renewal here is mostly driven by vested interests instead of the common good... ie rich lords paying off those in power in return for favours while the poor peasants suffer.

I had to pass up on 2 drains I found because of all the development going on. My plate of stuff I want to see is currently quite big at the moment and I'm not sure when I'll get to explore those drains.

I'd like to go just do those drains, but sentimentality and all this fighting the vested interest stuff is winning over me at the moment.

Just go there and drive/walk around.. its that small it wont take you long to find something

I was recently asked "Have you done Golburn Darkie?" I almost laughed out loud.
I replied "Explored it?! I found it!" I found this drain years ago while driving to Sydney with another Canberra explorer. We'd stopped off for a bite and I noticed one side of the road appeared to have a big drop off over a fence, while on the other side of the road was a car park. We looked over the fence and saw a drain canal. Waling around we soon spotted the huge drain entrance and climbed down to explore it.
