I just buy half a dozen of those $4 shoes from K-mart, gets me through the drains...

When I started draining I had a pair of steel-capped workboots, but I soon learned that they turn into foot-mounted aquariums when waterlogged. I'd still wear these when exploring anything else, however.

I also have a pair of Blundstone gumboots I got from Savers for $10. Gumboots are very newbie-esque but it's hard not to love having dry feet and trousers when the water level is right...

I have a question; ankle support, or no ankle support?
I'm accustomed to wearing shoes with zero support that are flexible enough to fold in half and twist 360° (Dunlop Volleys, Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66's, et cetera). This allows me to balance better and I can really feel what's going on under my feet. I can easily waterproof them with some candlewax and a hairdryer, but that doesn't stop water pouring in at the ankle. Also, due to the lack of support, that might put me at risk for really hurting my ankles if I do take a fall, and extra ankle support means that water is less likely to come in from the top (barring shin to knee high water levels). What do you guys think?

To each their own really. Personally, unless it's a pair of thongs I hate wearing anything that doesn't grip my ankles. Hell, my workboots are 250mm high! you can just about fall asleep standing up in them. It's an acquired feeling, but since wearing Hi-cut boots and shoes regularly I actually get sore calves from anything else.
