What are people's thoughts about drones / UAV with cameras affixed? Is anyone using them yet? Feels like only a matter of time before they might ruin half the fun of the abandons and drains.

Anyway, I'm a relative newbie who is interested in taggling along for a Sydney tour if one is happening anytime soon. I used to do abandos like the Glebe tram sheds and Pyrmont factories about 10-15 years ago, but would love to get back into it.

Welcome dustin

I think the drone market still needs more development before I have confidence in them taking into drains. Way too fragile for that sort of environment. Abandos may be ok.

Don't have any dates on the next tour unfortunately. I'm actually waiting for someone like yourself to organise :)

As you are a new member, is it ok if I move this to the new members discussion? Just thought I'd ask first as we get lots of complaints from people moving stuff without asking :?

Apparently even GoPro has one on the way! They'd be nice for recon I think. Although you'd obviously need one with a camera.

So pretty.

Drones are tough, but can be a b***h to fly well. Especially the cheaper ones.

Not sure about the half-decent ones with built in stabilisation though, i.e.

Do they work underground ie through concrete/rock?

Nah. Radio waves like to bounce around. If you confine the receiver the signal drops out real quick, you'd basically have to be walking along behind the thing for it to work, so ya might as well just explore the drain!

Being a keen photographer, I've had the same thought for a while now. Just got to get some funds!
