If you know where to look you will find something. I still do lots of exploring/scouting in the Hunter region even though I live in Sydney.
The whole exploring scene is pretty quiet in Newy. Looks like everyone in your area is too busy or they want to do stuff on their own.

Semi empty shopping centre (may actually be empty now) and what looks like a big empty building that's being renovated, both near one of the more popular music venues. If you get out and about you'll find things!
You can always trek down to Sydney if you're feeling adventurous.
