Nice. Canon 40d is a very good/solid camera. (Body is metal as opposed to plastic on the xxxD series and even the 60d and 70d)

Depends what you shoot most. I owned the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 for a while and that was quite nice and a much better lens than the kit!

I don't recommend the 18-200mm. It's expensive, heavy and is a jack of all trades but a master of none.

Consider a wide angle rather than more zoom.

I always promised myself I'd replace my kit lens when I found my photography was limited by my equipment, not my skill level, as such, I still suck at taking photos, so I'm still using a kit lens. I'd suggest trying it out for a bit first, taking photos isn't for everyone,

Don't skimp on a lens. You'll need more than $300.

This is a lie.
I spent:
35mm prime, $145.
18-200mm, $164.

That is quite cheap.

Nick's advice is good though! Just shoot some more and see what you're yearning more for (i.e. wider aperture, wider angle etc)

You'll need more than $300 for a GOOD lens.*

I'm on full frame, not DX, so it probably is.

+1 to what others have said about the 18-200. Go for the 17-50/55 if you want a standard zoom replacement for that f/2.8 goodness. The one I always recommend is the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 though. Fastest crop sensor wide-angle and it's affordable as well.
