Hey guys, sorta new to the photography side of urbanex but I'm really interested to begin taking photos. So far the research I've done has helped me nail it down to these two cameras. I'm still learning but i need some advice, for example what lense for what camera etc. would be much appreciated. Cheers 8-)

Whilst I am a Nikon person myself, Nikon's tend to be ludicrously complicated for no reason what so ever where as Canon's are more simplified - so if you're starting out I suggest Canon but if you want supahh sexy snapz then upgrade later in life by getting a Tamron lens. Can't go wrong with Tam...ron.

I bought a D5300 a few months ago, haven't had much chance to use it but it's been pretty sweet so far. Nikon is my spirit animal.

Both are great cameras that can produce excellent images, with Nikon currently having the image quality edge, and Canon currently having the user interface edge. To choose between them, to go to a camera shop, and try both in your hand. Purchase which ever one feels best in your hand.

By the way, it is strongly rumoured that a Nikon D5500 will be announced in January with a touch screen interface.

Honestly I think this is such a useless feature, besides to impress your friends. What is a touchscreen used for that is more productive than annoying, and especially while urban exploring? (tight spaces, dirty hands, etc.)

This convo needs a canon fan.. if ur looking at the 5300, I think the only diff between it and the 5200 is wifi and gps.. so if they're not necessities you could prob save some coin n go the 5200. And touch screen sounds like another gimmick to me, maybe a little bit handy

Compared to the Nikon D3200 and D5200 SLRs, the D3300 and D5300 don't have an anti-alias filter on the sensor for slightly better detail (as long as you have a sharp lens), and they have a more advanced image processor (expeed 4) for better high ISO performance, improved .jpg processing, and a longer battery life.

The main advantage of touch screens on SLRs is to quickly select focus points. Personally, I just see touch screens as another thing that can break prematurely.

I've been very happy with my ageing Nikon D60, however at nearly 7 years of age the sensor is increasingly suffering from hot pixels during exposures above ISO100, and thus a replacement is looming.

As they say, you can on a Canon.

Anyway.. I have a Canon eos M with a touch-screen. It goes aright. I like:
Selecting focal points like Light Knight said.
That it's quicker to navigate menus and set settings in manual mode.
Multitouch makes it quicker to zoom right in on preview images.

I could easily survive without it, but it's a neat feature.

I'd probably prefer to have a swivel-screen actually, if I were given the option.

I run a Canon 60D and 70D, the 70D has touch screen and the set-up time during a shoot is way faster than my rotating style buttons on the 60D.
It seems gimmicky at first but it's a real time saver and less aggrevating to use, after you have used one and go back it's a gimmick you miss.

If you can get touch screen go for it!

My 2c worth

Touchscreens are nice every now and then, but really on a camera any marketing bs level above and including "prosumer", there are enough buttons that you shouldn't have to use the back LCD at all.

I have the Cannon 700d with a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lens. Has been spot on for all Urbex applications thus far.

I am also a noob with technology so if i can-on you can-on too.... Sorry for the s*** pun, im going to go deactivate my account now.

I'm tempted to get a similar 17-50/55mm f2.8 for my Canon simply because I don't think I'll stick with Canon for full frame.
