In case most of you haven't noticed, I've been offline for a bit due to a house move and cleanup of our old family home in prep for a major house extension and haven't done any major posts or updates.

Anyway I'm sure I've bugged enough people around here in the last few years so I'll just leave everyone at peace for now :)

If I get the chance I'll post some pics of the "salvage operation" in this thread.

And I'll still try and do meetups where possible (night time is best now).

Yeah I'm hoping it should be smooth sailing. But we do have an asbestos garage to demolish and I think there might be asbestos around the eaves and kitchen somewhere from previous work. However it is funny that the switchboard has no asbestos!

Would have liked to demolish and go from scratch with a new house but don't have money so need to renovate and live with whatever asbestos is left am afraid. I hope to take the art deco stuff in the house such as the doors and knobs before the work begins. A friend told me the door knobs are hard to come by these days.

Plus there is an annoying gum tree we need to prune back. But the council will only allow us to prune one or two branches each month with each branch requiring separate approval application and fee which could delay the work. Talk about greed!

Going to be a very interesting 6-8 months I reckon. However I will try my best to reply to PMs and such.

Hope it all goes well Edge. Gumtrees are beautiful but can be a pain to remove, especially in your local council!

Yeah they are protected unless the gumtree is in a bushfire zone or is about to die. We only missed out on the zone by a couple of blocks :(

The other exception seems is when there is a huge residential development with lots of money changing hands, such as the recently demolished research complex. Lots of nice big gumtrees bit the dust in that area :(

Well I just discovered most of the brass door handles on our now "abandoned" house are actually mostly ferrous metal handles covered in a brass skin. I am currently getting a large pair of pliers to pry the skin off but it's taking a bit of effort.

My plan is to get the brass skin taken to the scrapyard.

Before I commit to buying more tools or just simply running the car over the door handle (risking a flat tyre) - anyone have suggestions on non-powered tools that can cut metal? Apologies for the slightly dumb question.

Sorry I will have pics soon, but just too pre-occupied right now to upload anything right now.

3 bucks a kilo for scrap brass plus the time and effort of separating it and getting it to the scrappy - I hope you have a lot of it mate!

Actually we have a few handles and knobs that are solid brass. Plus the strike plates are brass. I'm thinking of leaving those knobs alone for now - you're right its probably not worth the effort taking it apart.

And we seem to have lots of stainless steel and cables lying around which I think we won't need.

The scrap yard is actually quite close to where we live so it's probably worth the effort going there.
