Hi everyone, I'm from Melbourne. I'm looking forward to doing some exploring in abandoned places and rooftops :)

Also would someone be able to recommend a good cheap DSLR to start off with?

Hello Imagery,

Welcome to the forums. What would you consider as "cheap", throw us a price to work with :)

I think $500-800$ would be my budget!

Welcome.
I dont think you can go too wrong with whatever camera you get. Its all about the knowing how to see and capture a good shot as well as the lenses.

Im a Nikon man myself so im bit biased..

$499 For a Nikon D3200 kit with lense:

$789 For a Nikon D5300 kit with lense:
http://www.kogan.com/au/buy/nikon-d5300 ... kit-black/

All depends how serious you want to get into it. If you most likely will be using it as a point and shoot then get D3200 (Which is still a great camera regardless), if you are going to be playing with manual settings and spending hours on post-production then feel free to go D5300.

Im Using D5100 which was released before D5300, and can't fault it for my needs.

Hope this helps.

Hey mate. I'd recommend a Canon 60D second hand in that price range, you could pick up a good deal on gumtree or something.
If only you lived in Sydney - http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/sydney-c ... 1046891691
I'll have a look around Melbourne for you.
What ever you do, stay away from the 18-55mm kit lenses you will most likely be looking at and pick up a canon 50mm f1.4 if you can afford it - great lens. If not, a canon 50mm f1.8 or a 40mm pancake lens. Prime lenses are definitely better to learn on.

Edit: can't find any 60Ds cheap in Melbourne.

Aha, that Nikon vs Canon again. Here we go..

I hate to admit, but the choices in lens and camera from canon has been a bit poor lately. My 7d autofocus is showing a few faults already despite cleaning the AF sensor.
Just a harmless explorer. No need to waste taxes checking me ;)

definitely worth going for the 5000 series if looking at Nikon
if you can find a 5100 they're pretty cheap and still around. i have a 5200 now, seems pretty good upgrade and as the 5300 has been out a while, the 5200 is a bit cheaper - only additional benefit of the 5300 is WiFi and GPS

Hey Imagery :)
I'm using the Nikon D3200 with the kit lens on a Manfrotto tripod
all up $600 new 10 months ago
Its an very user friendly camera with a 24 mega pixel sensor
and the tripod rocks for urbex stuff and it packs up small
check out the pics I've taken with it -- Pics
I have had it since January & have learned a lot about manual settings and long exposures

just shoot it
