Getting around Sydney

(Moved from meetup thread. -Admin)

Hey everyone,

This might be a tad off topic and not really related to Urban Exploring but it still has some merit at understanding how safe Sydney is.

I am hoping to go down in the next coming days to photograph the Sydney Harbour late nights as I am primarily a night photographer and also venture into derelict buildings.

I have never been down to Sydney to take photographs and I will be traveling on foot, is it relatively safe around the Harbour?

At any rate has anyone encountered any unfriendly people whilst traveling into certain places into Sydney?

Thankyou everyone.

Raddaz.

Hi Raddaz,

That's a very general question regarding safety. I would say that Sydney Harbour is generally quite safe at night. If you venture into abandoned buildings though you just have to be aware of people possibly living there or shooting up in there but that's the same everywhere you go. Hope that's helpful.

While out exploring in Sydney at night you're more likely to get harassed by the cops than you are getting assaulted or robbed. And if you were unfortunate enough to get assaulted/robbed it would most probably be a random thing by some drunk idiot as opposed to somebody who is targeting you for your property.
Exploring alone is not ideal, best done with a friend who can watch your back and assist you in case of injury etc.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the reply firstly as I haven't done any exploring in abandoned buildings in Sydney just around the hunter valley.

I am entering a photography prize and need to get a couple of photographs of the harbour and in particular the naval fleet that is apparently down there so it will definately be legal!

Its good to know though about the general area is relatively safe and I try to not really be detected any way.

I will be down there hopefully tomorrow so I would hope not much drunkards on the loose around the area.

If I do decide to venture into the abandoned places I will definately try and organise with someone on here going with them as I am sure Sydney has a lot more to offer then Newcastle!

Thankyou for the reply too!

Circular quay is usually safe most of the time and probably safer with such a high profile event. The only places I would worry about are Kings Cross, Redfern, Oxford St and George St near Hoyts and Broadway. For abandonments, definitely try to go with someone, especially with abandoned houses or hospitals in the CBD where squatters could be hiding.

Keep us updated on your shots.
Just a harmless explorer. No need to waste taxes checking me ;)

Kept mostly to the main streets around the area so everything was swell, where a few curious dwellings I was interested in but I don't know the area well enough and agree taking someone with me is paramount specially because I shoot at night.

I must say there where quite a few people out till about 3am which was kinda nice.

Shame I couldn't get on a few on the war ships to take some shots, but I don't think 5000 sailors and police would have appreciated that lol.

Also, how you carry yourself and how you act play a big part.
If you look scared you attract trouble.

Big jacket and looked menacing with a big tripod case with me so I didn't think anyone wanted to come near me lol.

What surprised me was that it was still a lot of people around at 3am which was rather comforting, though I'm not use to being around people.

Would be really keen to come down there to any expos or anything really to photograph any sites around the Sydney location!
