Urbex student project

Hi guys,
I'm a journalism student in Melbourne at La Trobe and I'm doing a project
on urban exploring, particularly in Melbourne but Australia wide too. We're
after people who would be willing to be interviewed about it, or willing to
share information. Anonymity is completely fine. If you're interested or
know of someone who would be I'd love to hear from you.
I'm a very amateur Urbex-er myself, hence the interest.
Thanks,
Jessie

Hobbies like Urbex are best left in the shadows, I know its cool but the more it's in the public eye, the more dangerous it is for everyone. We get caught, kids get injuried, people sometimes die doing this stuff. I've watched kids nearly burn down a building because they though it would be cool to do steel wool spinning indoors. If there wasn't another 3 urbexers stomping the flames out the whole place could have got up with us all inside.

I urge you to reconsider this venture, nothing good will come of it. Journalism doesn't have to be 'cool' or 'dangerous', just accurate and informative.

Bradley garret once had the same thought to interview the urban exploration community. That ended in years worth of court dates and people being put on a no fly permit.

Urban exploring or recreational trespassing. Please understand that drawing attention to this is not good for the people who do it.
There is always a way in.

If I were yourself, I would try and avoid writing about fake news :)

But seriously I don't have think the problem is the people writing about urbex. It's who is reading it that matters. More specifically those that have the intention to cause mailicious damage or draw attention to themselves especially once they find the locations. Do a bit more digging in the news and you'll spot a common thread.

Something to be aware of before putting pen to paper.
Just a harmless explorer. No need to waste taxes checking me ;)

Thanks. Yeah, we will be emphasising the legal side of it, the dangers, stories where it's gone wrong for people, and the urbexers we are interviewing are very open about getting permission and not damaging or graffiti-ing the locations they visit. So yeah, we want to do this very responsibly. Especially since we're in a comparatively small city so we don't want to just provide a map to the few locations we have.

The only people that will talk to you aren't really urbexers. I suppose you could say anyone that explores a place is in a way an urbexer but the kind of people that will talk with you do not really understand what urbex is about. Good luck though.
Wander often. Wonder always.
