I know now they reckon that its all about leeching of soil after rain into an underground carpark for the block of units.
And I know that the base under illawong is sandstone, so cave formations could pretty much be ruled out as a cause even before investigating...

But did anyone else get a little excited when hearing that we had a new sinkhole?

Based on its size (being somewhat circular) and the fact that it's built upon a heavy residential area, it was unlikely/impossible from the get-go. It's a new enough area that developers will realise they are building upon soft limestone bedrock and adjust their plans accordingly. Always hopeful, though.

On the topic of sinkholes though, I've got a trip to Ewen's Ponds planned for late this year, which should be awesome. I just need to invest in/borrow some photography equipment that will be appropriate. 8-)

Ah fair enough then. I saw it on the news, with images and all, so I was like "d'aw" :(
