It didn't feel right just to lurk and read so I thought I best say hello! Very new to all this so please bare with me.
Unknowingly I have been UEing since I was about 12 with my childhood neighbour on my hot pink bmx every school holidays in the surrounding cattle properties (about an hour and a half west of Brisbane). That was 21years ago now (but if my children ask I am only 21, they are too young to do that kind of math yet!).
Currently planning a trip to Pripyat which the husband wants to bring the kids on (I think not) but it won't be until they are all in school and I am back at work (youngest is currently 2). During that time I hope to relearn Ukrainian (my fathers family fled in the 50s) as well as Russian.
Welcome! You've come to the right place.
Have you seen much of Brissy? Share your adventures if you like.
Also, we all catch up sort of randomly. Keep an eye on the Brissy Random meetup thread.
Would be nice to have you along sometime.
Welcome to the forums.
Id research the trip to Pripyat before going which im sure you have been doing.
I would not bring kids along tbh. Too young for that place, theyre going through esential growth stages etc, god forbid..
Have a look through these forums about Pripyat and pripyat website forums it self.
Yes Titan, been doing lots of research! Children under 18 are not permitted in the area and as far as I am aware none of my relatives were actual residents of there town so I do not believe we have any grounds to seek special approvals. Tbh I didn't even want to take hubby, he isn't a traveller so when he said he wanted to come and make it a family holiday I was a little disappointed! Research has also revealed that post the temporary closure of all tours in 2011 and when they recommenced in 2012 you can no longer enter any buildings due to safety. I am not sure if there are any exceptions to this or not but I am doubting it which means a big rethink given it was a large reason for wanting to visit and it is a long way to go to not be able to see what I would like to...
And Nuggs, having a 2,5 and 6 yo means a trip to the supermarket is an adventure these days so I haven't been lucky enough to get out and do much exploring but with the two bigger kids in school this year and a penchant for babywearing I think I may wrap the little dude to my back and head out with the camera. Perhaps I will get a leave pass from the husband and make it to a meet up one day!
A few of the folk on here have been to Chernobyl. We were in Ukraine for exploring and had to see it.
I find it fascinating historically, but it's pretty controlled, we "accidentally" got separated from the group and had a poke around inside, I'm guessing you know better than most what Ukraine was like in the 1990s, so it comes as no surprise that nuclear radiation served as to deterrent to desperate people looting anything and everything, there were buildings full of stuff, but it was mostly stuff like desks and building materials.
Most people don't realize the area around the zone has hardly anything to see - they buried all the houses on the outskirts except for Chernobyl town, Pripyat and the power plant.
I've done a few different abandoned towns, Pripyat wasn't the best of them, but I'm glad I went, I probably wouldn't go to Ukraine again for it, but it's still damned interesting.
Thanks nick, that is reassuring to know (about it not being the best). And yes, all too familiar with the conditions of the Ukraine unfortunately, it really makes us realise how lucky we are over here.
