Has anyone seen one of these before?

Was commuting through old G-Town when I spotted this, unfortunately I was in a bus and could move fast enough to grab a picture, so I tracked it back with Google street-view. It's about 1.4-1.7m in diameter and I've seen dozens since ranging from a few inches above the ground to three feet.

(looks strikingly similar to conning towers on old warships

Just wondering what exactly these things hide? They exist almost solely around gas lines and drains, yet they seem accessible through hatches on the top

Last time I lifted something that looked a lot like that it ended up being a bore water well (at Moore park golf course). I though I was onto a winner, but in the end it ended up being a 4ft deep pit full of murky water.

Oh dear, it happens to all of us I suppose

I count twenty all between a series of retarding basins across 5.5 kilometers in a built up area, maybe not bore? Though that's the best explanation so far

We could go on guessing all week, but um, have you tried lifting one & looking inside? That would be your best bet. :)

I think you'll find that these are valve pits for pipes linking the reservoirs near the uni to the ones at the top of the hill, used to live in G-town, pretty sure I remember where you have seen these...
