Hey all,

I have only been seriously exploring for a few months, but I've always loved getting into places I shouldn't be (or that others can't). My GF and I have spent most of our free time this year finding, scouting and photographing sites, some abandoned, some not-so. We are particularly interested in old machinery and industrial sites.

I'm a skilled industrial and rescue climber and rigger and an advanced and rural first aider (Just in case that matters...).

Here is a link to my flickr page, there are a few photos of our adventures on there.

Thanks Chrisyelroy and Urbane.

Unfortunately for the next few weeks I'm pretty locked down with work, but hopefully there are some impromptu afternoon adventures between jobs. But I'm working with a friend on something that could be very exciting, involving one of the old theatres in Sydney and what lays beneath it... I'll keep you all informed.

Thanks guys.

@Crane, No we didn't, we looked around for weak points but it was locked up good and proper. We plan to go back in the next few weeks. We have some ideas on how to get in now.

Just an update: I've made a few comments on rope and gear safety recently and I figured I'd better put my money where my mouth is and show you a little of what I do.

This was Cockatoo Island (form memory it was a launch for Ford). It was funny, the scissor lift got stolen by another department and I got left there for about 45 minutes. I fell asleep on a cross brace (there are photos, but I can't put my fingers on them right now).

Wow, that is some cool stuff. I should probably learn to do some ropes and harnesses for safety but need some gear first.

Welcome to UEGA!
Thanks Midget,

If you want some training, I'm a qualified instructor. Just grab a cheep harness ($100 for a decent Petzl climbing harness) and I have more than enough gear to take you out and... Show you the ropes... (Sorry, I couldn't help it).

This goes for anyone whose interested.

That sounds amazing. Let me know when you're free via here/PM. :D

That aside, have you noticed how far apart our replies are?

Wow, Yea, I havn't been around much lately, work has completely swamped me (Add moving house and moving offices to that too). I'm hoping to get back to some form of normality soon (Or loose whats left of my mind and become one of the people living in abandoned buildings waiting to chase you little bastards out with a board with a nail in it...).

Yes, definitely keep us informed on that! I love old theatres and shoot a lot of theatre professionally but never get the chance to explore - always someone asking me if I'm supposed to be here.

I know there's a space under the main stage of the State Theatre that holds all the parts for the theatres former pipe organ. Love to see that!
Always carry a tripod. They're useful for smacking down junkies & scrappers.

Hehe, I used to do this for work,

Once while crawling around some catwalks, I dropped my knife, found a room full of bean bags, beer & a Playstation I brought it up with one of the staff, he dropped his voice and told me "You've never seen the happy room. Never bring it up again".

So many hidey holes.

I've spent a fair bit of time down there, including working on a restoration project that involved replacing and restoring said organ. There is a treasure trove down there, a lot of the old infrastructure is still there, such as the old ammonia air conditioner, and the 1918 Deutz submarine engine that was used as a backup generator until the late 90s. I ran the team servicing the flys for the first time the place opened in the 20s. We replaced a few hundred hand made bow shackles, I have a couple on my desk, they are so beautiful.

Here are a couple of shots I've managed to dig up (Sorry for the bad iphone shots)

The old generator

Starting instructions for the old beast

The old oil furnace

This is where I spent most of my time

And the view between my knees

BTW: Everyone of us on the crew saw the ghost of the usher. The crew all know about him and told us that if he is happy, he sits on a perch on the side of the stage - where most of us saw him, if not he makes it known. While we were working, one of my crew made a comment about the theater looking 'like s***'. Not long after a 10' coach bolt fell to stage from the fly grid (5+ stories) and grazed his shoulder, no one was up there or had been all day.
I don't believe in ghosts, but...
