Oh f*** I know you, I follow you on Flickr :p
Yeah i know! I thought u would just put 2 and 2 together lol. Yeah haha. I still not to sure how to get the photos on here. Y cant they just make it simple lol?
For Flickr, it's really easy. Click on a photo then click the little arrow to the bottom right of the photo. Click on 'BBCode', set a size, and then it generates the code for you automatically. Alternatively, just get an image link (so pretty much any web address that ends with a photo file extension) and embed it within this:

Code: Select all

Oh, you're on mobile. I'm not sure then, but you can still use the img tags for that. Thanks a lot, I've learnt a lot from other forum members such as Unclehaggz and Light Knight :) I don't use insta, not really in it for the followerbase but moreso to share with other explorers, so Flickr does it for me :)

Thanks heaps guys! Yeah im only just getting my head around flikr and have only discovered light knight and old mate uncle. Both really good at it to. Its just alot of time thinking about what works well and how much time you have with the amount of light. I can take 200 photos and be happy with one. Its funny though because sometimes i post my test shots and they have more reception than the ones i like. If u want any tips on anything feel free to ask!! I only found you the other day to def! Great shots!! Are u guys in melbourne and or cc members?

I hope you get to post some of yours, as I too follow you on Flickr ! appreciate the feedback too Mindraped  , I love this LP as a hobby and the creativity can keep you awake at night. I often wake and think, I'll try this and that, and I can spend hours doing it. So much creativity out there, it's all absorbing !!

I am trying harder and harder to get the Orb's right to the point of frustration, so much that, I made an orb tool ! great for smallish orbs just to perfect the larger ones!! ( but still keen on hand spinning due to quickness and convenience.

Almost needs it's own section on the forum (LP that is), it can bring a whole new perspective to urbex, using abando's as backdrops etc.

Great thread !!!

Kind regards

Lol tell me about it im up now its 3am and ive been plaving with mini domes lol. Im a stay at home dad so i got way to much time lol. I use fairy lights duct taped into a bunch and then a roll of duct tape at the end of the string to give it the weight. Spin pretty fast but not stupid yeah? My orbs are hit and miss abit but when they come out clean they are awsome. Dennis smith has perfected it and im sure he uses a similar light to me. Just gotta make sure that light is visible from any angle to get that clean look. And you need weight at the end of the string to keep the orb balanced.
if u saw my orb tool u would die laughing lol. Its s*** as but it does the trick. Try attaching two lights to your string to. Gives it an orb in an orb style. Blue and orange work well together. Green and red are crap. Green ALWAYS beats red. I keep saying string but i use telstra rope. Its good stuff lol.

1 full rotation, start and stop via push button on battery pack (hand held)

Some pics showing some LP tools I've made, the torch's are the old maglites with Neons removed and modified to take an LED. The orb tool (hand rotate) is powered by 3V and uses 3 push buttons, 1 for each colour as shown. I will show other tools when I dig the out of the bag ! The batons have either slide switch as in the amber one or a push button for each colour as in the Blue/white (shown with both on). Colour rendition in house lighting is somewhat unusual but hey blue light on a green worktop isn't the best way to display it I suppose.

Thanks for the feedback, no I haven't considered making and selling, would need a lot more polishing off to be saleable! I have other projects on the go atm, just a few early pics of some results, need to practice more though but the RGB light is adjustable colours, brightness and Speed of strobe if required.

I bought some acrylic rod Thursday and made a V24 (light sabre) of my own, that was used for the RGB orb, I am still trying to get more light out of it ! I shall consider making the orb spinner, the V shaped light blade and possibly a couple of other designs. The biggest cost is the RGB remote controller, these can be bought from DX.com like this ($23.99)
Image
Image
I have enough RGB led strip for making a number of units, if interest was high enough perhaps I might consider doing them. To cut costs down to myself if people bought the controllers I could supply the leds/wiring/rods all assembled ready to wire straight to the controllers.
Orb spinners are easy as, and with Christmas not that far away, cheapo chrissy lights are the perfect donors for leds and battery compartments.

There are cheaper controllers for $8.97 but untried and tested by myself, I think they'd do the job as they are capable of running 2A per channel

Your thoughts!!

Sounds very cool Unclehaggz, I must admit that I'm not fluent in mechanical lingo though :3

I would be interesting in purchasing an orb spinner, they're a pretty cool gadget to have.

Btw, you should start a journal thread!

Dude awsome. Im the same im so crap with electrics lol im a plumber so kinda opposite for me lol. Id be more than happy to buy one of each!! Tip for lightsaber is blow your iso out to 800 and it should be alot better without to much damage to the overall shot. If u havent already tried this. I have a manual aprature lens so being able to change fstop mid shot is an great thing. Ie blow wool at f 13 then el wire work back on f3.5 without stopping the shot!! Priceless. Thoese cheaper controls look like alot more buttons than the first which could be an issue in the dark knowing what ones to hit! I think you should make up 2 test kits and name a price. I say 2 coz ill take one lol. Once again great work. Most people i know dont have the mind to do that stuff. Its a talent and if u can make some side cash off it its nothing but a win win for everyone!! Making money doing something you love is the best kinda pay

I have fixed the light intensity of the sabre by buffing the outside of the sabre rod in the lathe, this has increased the light distribution along the length of the rod !! . I also turned a slight taper so the cross section reduces as they amount of light available reduces along its length, works a treat!!

I will start making the Orb spinning tools this week, they will either be two or three colour as shown earlier in the post.

I will start a Journal thread on this soon too! Thnx Phytrix for the bump!!

Really appreciate the feedback guys and hope to have something for you guys to try out!!

Let me know what a jornal thread is and how i can follow it. Im loving most of the people on this forum some really smart creative people. Awsome. Now a question. Has anyone had a crack at building a barn door tracker? Its a device that stops star trails. Seen the pics of the insanely bright milky way? Chance are a barm door tracker or scotch mount were used. It opens at the same speed as the earth is spinning creating the perfectly still stars. Can expose up to 15 min and no star trails!! Im intrested in making one but again i dont have the electronic skills. I could easily build a manual one but i dont like the way they work. Much more precise with motors. Anyone tried it?

Haven't tried that one, but have built a CNC mill, that uses stepper motors and is basically the same principle! just using micro stepping instead of full steps, that's just a set-up feature in the stepper driver programme. Standard stepper have a standard of 200 steps per 360deg rotation, this will give you on a 1.75mm pitch leadscrew 1.75/200 = .00875mm per step, or if using micro-stepping of 16 per step= 0.000546875 extreme accuracy or what! I think the way I'd approach it is to adapt a table and use the mill stepper driver to travel whatever the arc distance is in feedrate for an axis.
I hope this is sort of an explanation of how stepper control works.

Just a (possibly stupid) question on powering LED strip lights (I'm not an electrician). How do you work out the battery requirements for powering a set amount of LED strip? Would I be right in saying that you need the battery holder/number/types of batteries to produce the required voltage for the LED strips (e..g 4 AAs in series would be 6V)? Also, how do you then work out the number of batteries required to run a certain amount of LED strips for a decent amount of time? Thanks for any answers.
