Draining safety advice?

Hope this is the right place for this post, not sure if it should be in equipment but anyway,

As mentioned I've been doing a little bit of draining recently and maybe I'm just paranoid but I read somewhere that some underground water pipes are made of asbestos, and I've seen a little bit of some kind of dust occasionally. Can anyone familiar with the Australian drainage system tell me whether I should be worried or not? Currently I just wear a surgical mask, but I'm not sure if this is adequate.

Long story short, is a respirator recommended for draining?

As long as it is not broken, cracked etc. an asbestos pipe is mostly harmless.

If you don't mind wearing a mask all the time, that is definately the way to go. You never know what you're inhaling. It's not just asbestos that can f**k you up either. A good charcoal respirator will stop nearly anything, except your own bad breath.
