UTS Cranes and elsewhere in the CBD

Been peering at the cranes opposite the UTS building for a few days now (every time I'm on a train to Central). They are f**king massive. I see why ... who was it, twisties? chickened out. Need to have nerves made of steel, or rather, no nerves at all.

I also see a few cranes in the distant CBD skyline. Hm...

Yeah man that was me, I was really keen on them but I went up the UTS building to level 24 and had a look at them out the window, they still went heaps higher than where I was standing, and from where I was it looked insane. I was with a couple of mates and we straight away were like "...F-ck that!". I think it would take almost an hour to climb to the top once you factor in the nerves. I'd say the operator is probably catching the lift up to the top of the building and going across to the crane on a bridge. Also one of my mates said to me that he'd walked past at 3am one Sunday and they were still working so definitely need to scope out their hours. It was probably a once off but you never know.

The red and black one is also an enormously strong crane so I wonder if there are plans for it to go a lot higher than where it currently sits? I might be keen to climb that one if it goes a little higher. At the moment I think it's sitting too low to see much, but the ladders look a lot safer!

3AM ON A SUNDAY?! I might not be able to get in then... that's like, my favourite time for live sites, and if they're still working... maybe they're working 24/7? Working in shifts... Hm... what about when it's raining... nah, don't want to climb a crane when it's bloody raining.

If I did climb it, I think I would have to start from the bottom, from my experience, most big cranes are harder to access a few floors up, but it might be different. I still haven't done any scouting yet though, so nothing going to happen until then.

I really, really want to climb it for the view and photos, but I also really, really don't want to die... oh! This dilemma!

I think this site would be very easy to get into, it's enormous and backs onto little dark laneways. It would be very easy to jump the fence. At the same time you'd think that there would be some decent security in there so that's something to think about.

Like I said that was probably a once off when they were working at 3am, but you definitely need to scout it out.

I'm happy to help plan this out with you guys, I got to uni at UTS so I'm in there like twice a week (not this week - holidays :) ). I've been looking at it a fair bit, there are a number of ways of entering that place and most are extremely easy and out of sight. The crane itself is out of sight hidden behind the buildings so I think you'd be pretty safe there too. I would just be weary of security, and remember that that crane is around 30 floors up. It's quite a height. If you guys meet up to scout it out let me know and I'll see if I can make it. I don't know if I'll be up for climbing it, it's a freaky height but I'm definitely keen to have a closer look.

From what I've seen, the crane seems difficult to access on the higher floors. It would mean more than a hundred metres climbing straight up.

What made it difficult to access if you don't mind me asking? I haven't been able to get up close but it looked like you would be able to cross over from the building to the crane on the stabilizing arms that link into the building further up. I assumed one of them would have a bridge to save the crane driver having to clim bthat ladder each day.

100 metres straight up, and if you look at the ladder it's the shitty style with no cage around it. I don't like them as it is let alone at 100metres up!! lolololol

I didn't get a close look at it, so that's "from what I've seen". Certainly would be awesome if the ladder wasn't necessary on the lower floors.

There's an easier and safer one next to the tallest crane. It's so sturdy, it's like safe sex. It's about level with the UTS tower.
