Out of curiosity, what kind of authority do security guards have? I imagine it varies by state and situation, but are they allowed to exert physical force, request full ID, etc?

From http://www.activistrights.org.au/handbook/ch02s10.php
Mainly related to Victoria but I imagine its very similar in each state.

Security guards have nothing more than the power of "citizen's arrest". This power is provided by section 462A of the Crimes Act 1958 (Vic). Section 462A provides that “any person” who witnesses an offence occurring, or where there is immediate danger of a crime being committed, may use reasonable force to effect an arrest.

Security guards can legally arrest you. They must inform you of the reason for arrest, and then advise the police immediately. Be aware of the restrictions that apply to the use of force by security guards - if you feel that ‘unreasonable' force has been used you can allege assault or pursue civil action. What is ‘reasonable' force will be determined by common law.

Security guards are trained to use handcuffs as a last resort where the person resists lawful arrest and cannot be restrained by other lawful means. Because security guards do not have uninhibited authority to use these, there is always room to argue the legality of their use, as incorrect use can again result in criminal prosecution or civil action.

You should always keep in mind however that private security agents are often armed and always in uniform. They do not have the same training, or the same oversight and reporting mechanisms as police officers. BE CAREFUL when dealing with private security guards.

So I bought a set of car mats today, no one sells just the rear mats. :/ Though as it turns out, the front mats fit the rear seats better. The problem is that the driver's mat has a sturdy rubber section to reduce wear and tear, yet the passenger side does not. Now I'm left with mismatching mats in the rear. :/ Time to buy another set, but what do I do with the spares? ==

Interesting.....happen to know the power limits of a tram/train ticket inspector as well? I read a while ago they couldn't really restrain you if u decide to do a runner, and they're not allow to chase after you if you do run, is that still the status quo?

http://ptv.vic.gov.au/getting-around/au ... -officers/

If you cant/dont provide good ID they can arrest you and hand you over to the police but if you're on their bad side on record you can probably kiss any chance of leniency in the future goodbye.
There has been news inspectors have been given a notice not to give chase (what PSOs are for now really) but no sign of official guidelines stating such.
