Unfortunately, it contains limited information.

If you already know where said tunnels are, its a good informational tool. With the right background work, you might be able to locate a few of them, but otherwise...3/10

Still a good find though. :) KUDOS!

Researching into documents like this is okay sometimes but it can only go so far. Just get out there and do stuff. If the weather is good, go for a drive and see what you find. There are drains and tunnels almost everywhere, just a matter of playing your cards right and finding a way in (and out) without injuring yourself. And ALWAYS do it safely if you do.

I've made it a habit to take gps coordinates for every canal I see while driving to check back later.. and every grille I see must be looked down into as well (I'm the guy that always makes my friends stop and wait just to do this). Most of the time it's nothing but you do come across some epic stuff once in a while.. that's what makes it worth it :)

Haha, I'm also that kind of person. People wonder what the hell I'm doing.

Do you ever see gutter boxes with "Do not litter, leads to creek/ocean"? I think this would be a good indicator too

Without giving location details.... such as what? What mega goodness is missing? Abandoned UE HQ, abandonments, drains, what? I mean there's a huge amount of stuff there.

The file available on the Internet was indeed compiled by me, and then distributed by several people. I recall great amusement when one silly bugger said he had a great GE file of stuff he had compiled, only to send me y own file back, then demanding I send him a copy of the info I had.

Anyway, there is a 2012 edition of this file, but I need to clean it up as there needs to be more folders so things are better organised. I would be happy to distribute it to legitimate urban explorers then. I would also be happy to add anything people want to add to it.

I should also say that while Google Earth is a tool, and a nice tool, it does not replace getting out there and actually exploring. I've done many a road trip and discovered some really nice stuff (a lot of which were previously independently discovered by other people as well). Mind you, a lot, particularly in former Soviet countries and Asia have never been seen by many urban explorers yet, particularly in war zones.

Quite a lot has been found since you did your whole disappearing act.. And for the sake of preserving these locations to experienced and TRUSTED people, I won't be giving out any info or even hints.

I still don't understand why you need to put all these locations on the line and share it on the net. It can get s*** locked up, vandalized the f*** out of and not to mention cause another tragedy like Fortress a few years ago when a bunch of kids who obviously had no clue what they were doing drowned while being in one of the most lethal drains while raining in Sydney.

Hmm,well I think I'll just agree to disagree on this then.

Oh,and that bunch of kids had names. They were Holly Legge

And Dwayne La Rosa

Pretty much the reasoning of why I created the Google Earth file was twofold. First, I like Google Earth, it is a great tool for mapping, and I like mapping things. It helps me to see stuff in relation to where they are. So I made use of the technology.

Second, the information used to be on the Internet, and for free. Back in the mid 1990s there were three separate web sites that each had location sheets on them. Two of those web sites were cave clan sites. One done by Fil in Canberra, and one by Diode in Sydney. That information was available freely, at no cost, to anyone. So for years there was no restrictions on access. Then you could also buy location sheets for $2 by sending a stamped self addressed envelope to the PO box in Abbotsford. That was also available to anyone. Though Doug has explained that at the time the lists were about 10 pages long and the $2 covered the costs.

From what I've gathered now you can only buy location sheets and I've had some people offer to sell me a 'cave clan' Google Earth file which each time turned out to be my own file. From what they emailed me, they said they'd paid the cave clan for the file or that they were the cave clan. Though I am not sure of the truth of that.

So the information in the Google Earth file is free of charge, free of cost and will continue to be so. I don't just hand it out to anyone. The copy on the Internet wasn't posted by me, but I have no issue with it being there. I don't think people should pay for something that was free, and should still be free.

Personally I don't want conflict, I figure I'm too old for that. Mapping is just my thing. I enjoy doing that. I enjoy sharing my maps. I'm not doing this to piss anyone off. It is just a fun hobby for me. Also, there is a safety aspect to it. I am trying to map up to date information on access points to drains, so that in the event of an emergency, people can head for the nearest safe exit.

Again, I don't want conflict. Perhaps we should discuss a suitable 'release policy' for this information? I'd like to see it available to urban explorers who have clearly cut their teeth exploring sites. Not just urban explorers who belong to specific groups, or specifically the cave clan. If you can suggest a way to do that,I'd be happy to consider it.

Back to Holly and Dwayne, the coroner's report indicates they found the location of the Fortress on the Sydney Cave Clan web site, and that the bolts to the drain manhole had been cut by cave clan members. It also shows that they had consumed alcohol while in the drain. This is similar to what occurred with 'Bob' / Brian McHugh, another drainer who died in Melbourne. The coroner's report on him also indicated he had alcohol in his system. The same with several other explorers who have died. In fact drugs and / or alcohol are common threads with urban explorers who have died. I know of just 1 known urban explorer who died during an exploring incident which was not alcohol or drug related. But there may be others.

I must say my reasons for mapping online are pretty much the same. I enjoy the process, building maps is fun :) it's also great for finding new stuff in a visual relational way and putting all the tid bits of info and clues in one place where you can piece it all together. I agree its great safety wise too, you can know several exits and the flow and offshoots of a drain before going in so you know your options once in. Some might say this takes away the fun, but each to his own, it doesn't spoil it at all for me.

Yeah, for me mapping is part of the fun. I love finding stuff online on sites like Google Earth, and tracing it above ground then going there and seeing it. I know the two are not the same, but it makes for faster, leaner exploring when I know where I am going. When I was traveling overseas I missed out on heaps of places I drove past only a few kilometers off because I didn't know they were there. I recall I drove right past the Mittleworks tunnels in Germany and missed a part of the French WW2 fortifications around Nantz for the same reasons. Here I just can't afford to go throwing away fuel.
I like sharing maps and stuff with other explorers because it is fun as well. Comparing notes and so on. It is all about the exploring, and all about the fun.

Anything on the internet will spread, JC.

It's fine to map things out privately, I do it as well for my own records.. It's good fun. But in the interest of keeping these places explorable and away from inexperienced kids, keep it to yourself. Half the fun of UE is finding things that are new anyway.

And in regards to the fortress incident.. Derp, of course they had names. I have a few mutual friends from back in school that knew Holly/Flaps. It's not a nice way to go, and this is another reason why I feel strongly about not giving away locations other than close trustworthy friends who are experienced and know what they're doing.

Of course the blame first looked at the cave clan. But I can assure you, none of that info is publicly available from the clan now, nor was it available at the time. There are a few documents which still spread from the 90's with a bunch of old locations.. but lesson learnt, don't leave s*** out in public. Times have definitely changed and mate, you need to get a refresh on the current state of things. I know you've been out of the scene for a while so don't take it as a personal attack.. I understand where you're coming from. Things were different back then.

No media, no spreading locations = Fun exploring for many years to come.

I should point out again, I didn't put my GE file on the Internet. I don't know for sure who did.

Yeah, I realised a lot changed after the Fortress Incident. It should have changed after Bob drowned in Norhtcote Golf. But anyway, it has, and yeah, probably for the better. I figure if the rules / code of conduct was around when I was a member that I'd probably still be there. http://www.caveclan.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=312 It is no secret that I have mental health issues. I suffer a lot from anxiety and autism. If people had been a bit kinder to me, and understood that I just like to be nice and be treated nicely and pretty much do my own thing then I guess I would have gotten on better. I'm not used to 'friendly' digs, because I have almost no ability to determine what is friendly and what is not, so I just take everything to heart. Of course I didn't realise that back then so I guess what happened has happened for better or worse. It would be nice to start over, but I guess that isn't going to happen.

But, do you have an issue with me sharing my maps with explorers I know, and explorers I have met through forums such as this one who have demonstrated that they are genuine explorers? Or they untrusted? Because I'm not releasing my GE file open slather. I'm not posting it on a web site. I'm not posting it in this forum. I'm only giving it to people I trust. Also, I've only ever given one media interview, and that was to an UE related interviewer back during OPEX'94.

As for assurances, well I'm not trying to argue or pick a fight but take a look at this:
http://www.urbexforums.co.uk/showthread ... ains/page2

And then this
https://www.google.com.au/#hl=en&safe=o ... in+lurline

And then this
https://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=Lurli ... y&t=m&z=15

I can assure you that there were very clear clues to the location of many drains on several cave clan web sites at the time, most particularly the Sydney Cave Clan web site. There still are, as well as public sites;
http://www.walkingmelbourne.com/forum/v ... 1&start=30

So how about we just agree to disagree over this eh? You guys do your thing, I'll do my thing. It does not make either of us better or worse explorers. It just means we have slightly different values. I think it would just be more fun to go and explore, get to know one another and forget about the politics. I'm seriously not wanting conflict. Just let by gones be by gones and get on with the business of exploring eh?

Wow, I never realised how much 'politics' actually happened in the past. It all means sweet FA to me. I had'nt read this whole thread until, this arvo. So it's rather amusing that the one single piece of information (the .kmz file) that actually got me off my arse to explore the Sydney stuff (I'd just done local and rural stuff, off my own bat), was the much maligned file which Panic compiled.

You deserve some thanks mate, because rather than focusing on the negative crap, I think you've done fair dinkum explorers a bloody big favour, and I wish more people would be willing to share info with fellow MATURE explorers.

By the way, if the system I have 'found' up my way is 'new' do I get to name it? (I have to see if it's any good yet, I have just done recce's looking down grates and some internet research))

Honestly, finding the locations is often more fun than exploring them.

I've "found" 100+ drains in Australia and some of my fondest memories are of the Hunt :)

I think it has made it to easy and with that list it has taken alot of the acual exploring and effort out of it.
I know explorer's that will refuse to use the kzn file [you know who you are] and I call them real explorers. but that is my opinion and everyone has a right to have there own also I have used it to.
