I wonder how much of that is spam? Hell, I'd even donate if it meant getting a more secure website.

I've noticed a lot of members on here who have never posted. Surely that can't be very secure, having lurkers trawling the forums. Have those accounts been created by an automated system?

*over 9000.
Sorry.

But there are tonnes of spambots here still. Click on practically any member with 0 posts and their website/interest are spam related.

e.g. http://www.uega.net/forums/memberlist.p ... file&u=625
http://www.uega.net/forums/memberlist.p ... file&u=587

And I;m pretty sure this whole list is bots

I'm a bot stealing your internets. :)
Seriously though, it is wise to get rid of lurkers & bots, especially when discussing trivial crimes like recreational trespassing.
Could just send out an alert asking all members to post a message in a given time (a week or 3) & those people who do not respond should have their accounts frozen, at least until they do.
That way you know who is who. Just sayin'.

What we can do is open a new section of the forum where people must post a certain amount. (post count) before they can go through to the rest of the forum....

Thoughts.

Actually Titan that would work perfectly.. What if new members HAD to post an introduction before they could even view the rest of the forums? maybe if all the other forum links were visible but locked out as such? That way you've caught the bots before they post any of their crap elsewhere, Without deterring anyone who is genuinely interested.
I'm assuming of course the forum software is capable of this or some similar action though.

Do we have email confirmations? Also I remember when I signed up, I had to wait for an admin to approve. That might not be a bad idea to put that system back in place. Require them to write a short little message or something.

The admin approval is now lifted and is now just set back to email confirmation. Admit bit was just a matter of going into admin area and manualy approving the memberships. No idea how we can make them write notes etc.

But a noob area is very possible to do :)

The C/C Forums (also phpBB) now has a question that you need to answer when setting up an account.

It stops the spambots and crap from registering.

You could have something like "complete this sentence - urban ----------
