Hey, I was wondering what are some ways to identify and deal with asbestos? Should people completely avoid asbestos or are there still ways to urbex with asbestos around?

A lot of older homes have asbestos in it. It's not an issue if you're not kicking/breaking it up.

Wearing a mask is also a good precaution.

One great way of dealing with asbestos is to ignore it.

only affects you if you breathe it in
not if you ingest it
therefore, eat it all, problem solved

There's an old thread on this subject.
Search the forum for it if you like.

TL;DR:
It's always a slight risk at older places -
A) Risk it
B) Avoid all together
or C) Get a decent mask and suit

This should be in our initiation routine.

"So what do I have to eat?"
"Asbestos ice cream topping."
"WTF! No way man!"
"Come on, watch me do it."

There's a lot of crew out there that have been exploring asbestos filled abandonment for 30+ years & they're still kicking, then there's quite a few that have died from cancer after only exploring (mainly abondos) for a few years. Go figure.... Luck of the draw I guess.

Yeah, there's also a few Urban Explorers who have died from Asbestosis. Back in the day when I used to post on UER.CA there were a few mentions of explorers dying from it.

I figure you know what, if I explore a place that I know there's asbestos in, I'm going to buy a disposable mask, coveralls and overshoes because damn it they're cheap and I can think of far nicer ways to die than from my lungs bleeding blood into themselves till I drown in my own blood.

You don't drown in your own blood, the outer layer of the lungs scar up effectively stopping your lungs from being able to expand enough for adequate oxygen intake to sustain life...

So you suffocate slowly....
