I have heard a few people bring up abyss recently , and I am just wondering why it is considered by so many people as a "good" drain?
The way I remember it was a low tunnel, not long with only the trap and falls as a feature. Upstream had 1 shape change from memory but I was the only one who could fit back then, so it doesn't really count. Perhaps it has been redone in the last decade? Or my memory has faded?

Indeed that is how I recall it. That ever so tight squeese in from the golf course, the low tunnel the Gross Pit Trap and the fall. But the view. That view. Oh amazing! You just don't get a feature like that in any drain anywhere else in the world. I have never seen that in any other country or here in Australia. So while it is small and short, it is very unique.

Do you know the first guys to explore that drain climbed down to the entrance from above using just ropes tied to the fence and no other specialised gear?

So, 10 years ago. You must have been around when I was exploring in Sydney. Did we ever meet?

Yeah the view is spectacular I guess I have grown accustomed as I see it every day. Strangely enough i have never used the golf course entrance, we were always small enough to fit though the gutter box.

I wish they had left those ropes, would have come in handy when at about 9 yrs old me n a mate decided we could do it alone and weren't strong enough to pop the cover from below so had to march back to the other end and I free climbed the left cliff face to run back and let him out. Do you no who discovered it?

I highly doubt we met, I was only about 13, 10 years ago.

Whoa! That takes guts! I am impressed! That is a seriously full on drop from there.

Nope, I don't recall who found it.

I seem to recall the golf course exit was pretty easy to lift. It may have been a light grille if I recall right.

They've got very thin wire on it tieing it down. Easy to get thru with pliers. The one outside the high golf wire is padlocked.

I agree, free climbing that exit, with that drop, is insane. !!! :-)

Yeah it was definatly insane but as I say, too young, inexperienced and unprepared left me in a situation where it was the only option so u do what u gotta do:)

I didn't mention the part were we decided to go without a torch, because that would have meant alerting mum to our intentions;) HA! Glory days!........unbelievably stupid decision.

Had a memory flash back to me earlier.- we squeezed through wat I remember to be a very small double pipe section upstream into some kind of box / pit, followed the pipe upstream and ended up looking out a gutter box that I think was at the shops on the main rd. Has anyone done this? U would have to be damn small from memory.

Ok scratch that, a diversion and trap has been installed since those days.
